The Spinal Cord Research Centre’s mission is to provide an environment for world-class spinal cord research and training, through our leadership and expertise in the areas of locomotor control and spinal cord physiology from membrane properties to systems physiology, neuronal networks and regeneration. We have nine core laboratories dedicated primarily or exclusively to spinal cord research, as well as five affiliated labs pursuing research in neurosciences. We are located at the Bannatyne campus, next to the Health Sciences Centre, in downtown Winnipeg. Together we offer many opportunities for graduate studies research and training.
I am interested in training at the SCRC – How do I apply?
Applying for graduate studies at the University is best handled through the department of your prospective supervising faculty member (the researcher with whom you wish to train). The process for trainees, and the requirements for admission, as well as application deadlines can vary from one University department to another. All the core SCRC faculty members are in the College of Medicine’s Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology.
To help with the application process, the Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology has prepared a guide entitled Graduate Student Guide to Success. In this downloadable PDF booklet you will find information about the department and its facilities, student support services, academic regulations, financial support and awards, and living in Winnipeg. Perhaps most importantly, it will help navigate the sometimes daunting process of application to graduate studies, meeting requirements for admission and registration, course selection, and many other details.
An important first step is to select a faculty member with whom you wish to negotiate for a trainee position. You can browse through our directory of principal investigators to see their areas of expertise, descriptions of their research programs, and if they are actively recruiting trainees. Each faculty member’s profile shows their contact information, as well as the department or college in which they are located. For affiliate faculty in departments other than Physiology & Pathophysiology, you should browse the websites of their home department or college to learn about their procedures and requirements. The above guide may still be helpful, but pay attention to department-specific requirements and deadlines for the department to which you are applying. If you cannot find the information you need from your prospective supervisor’s department or college web site, contact their general office to help guide you through their specific requirements.
